this book is a real cliffhanger. it took me less than a day to read it

For two hundred years, the city of Ember has been the last refuge of the human race. But the lamps that light the city are growing dim, which could mean the end of Ember. 12 year old Lina and her friend Doon have found an ancient message that might hold the key to saving the city. Will they be able to decipher the message, before it's too late?

I really enjoyed this book, and I think it is a great one for kids to read. It is set in a dystopia, but not one that is as dark as "The Hunger Games". Pretty enjoyable, and I will check out the rest of the series!

My Grade 4 teacher read this book to our class and everyone loved it. Then we watched the movie, I think this is one of the few books that the movie hasn't disappointed me. Now I realized there is an entire serious so I'm going to re-read this book, watch the movie, and then finish the rest of the serious! I love this book and I defiantly recommend it! Enjoy!

I'm always envious of kids who are reading this for the first time (and without watching the movie version) because they are going to get that awesome feeling at the surprise ending. This is one of the best sci fi books written for kids in the last 20 years.

Can't believe I watched the movie first! The book was better. Revealed more than what the movie portrayed. A good read as post-apocalyptic books go.

In the City of Ember, lived two young teenagers named Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow. Surronding their city is nothing but total darkness. For 200 years, the citizens of the City of Ember lived in a world of amazing lights. But now, the buildings are crumbling, the supplies are decreasing and worst of all- the lights are starting to go out. When Lina finds an old box whos content may save the city from going to utter darkness, she discusses it with Doon. And unfortunately, as the contents of the box were ancient and that Lina's little sister has chewed on it, there are holes in the paper. The papers seem to be instructions for something..... can it be intructions to save their city?

“There is so much darkness in Ember, Lina. It's not just outside, it's inside us, too. Everyone has some darkness inside. It's like a hungry creature. It wants and wants and wants with a terrible power. And the more you give it, the bigger and hungrier it gets.”
