With the help of a fairy, he gets the creatures book, or fairy bible, and wants to kidnap a fairy. He succeeds and kidnaps LEProcon's first female police officer, Holly Short. Now, the whole LEP police force must get there former officer back by giving Artemis Fowl a lot of gold, at the end, Artemis Fowl gives half back the gold given to him, if Holly promises to heal his mother's depression from him father being lost for 2 years. Reluctantly, she agrees. Artemis Fowl then let's go of Holly, and everything works out in the end, except that Artemis Fowl now knows the secrets of the under ground fairy world, and will now continue to learn all about them in his next books, and will meet up again with his enemys.
Artemis Fowl is a really good book because there is no antagonist, there is only two competing protagonists. One of the protagonist is more of a group called the LEP. Artemis Fowl is the other protagonist. His goal is to get fairy money from the LEP, the fairy police, by giving them a ransom note because he had kidnapped one of their officers.
Artemis Fowl is one of the greatest criminal minds the world has ever seen-and he’s only 12 yrs old! Thanks to his superior hacking abilities, Artemis discovers the existence of “The People”-otherwise know as faeries, trolls and leprechauns. He learns that if he can find a copy of “the Book” he will have access to their vast treasure of gold. With his skilful sidekick Butler at his side, Artemis quickly locates and decodes The Book’s secrets-making him the first person in history to do so. What he doesn’t know is that he is now being hunted down by the LEPrecon’s finest Fairy commando-Holly Short. Notices
Add a NoticeOther: some intense crude humor. Parts of it I don't mind, but others.... it would be way better without that stuff.
Coarse Language: just a little bit of swearing, and some of it is in the language of the fairies.

"Trust me. I haven't been wrong yet."
The story began several years ago at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Artemis had devised a plan to restore his family’s fortune. A plan that could topple civilizations and plunge the world into a cross-species war. He was only twelve years old at the time..

Add a CommentThis was a fun series to read and Eoin Colfer is a great author! I've spent many nights reading until dawn to finish his books. But I did hate to bring these books to school because I was always ridiculed about reading books based on a 12 year old criminal mastermind who captured fairies. But whatever; they're the ones who are missing out! All in all, this particular series was AWESOME!
allisonallain, you seriously need to start using the SUMMARY page!
Artemis Fowl was witty and clever. Very good book and decent plotline. But the bathroom humour was a bit much for me.
I just recently read this... well, actually I listened to the audiobook, but the book is AMAZING =) So far, I'm on The Opal Deception. The Eternity Code was the funniest, but it was kinda sad... =(
Hilarious, I enjoyed it greatly and can't wait to read the others of the series!
Amazing! Great first book to the series, expecially the parts featuring Artemis. Artemis is my favourite character of all time! He's the one that makes the book worth reading! If you like this book as I do, after you finish reading it, then read the rest of the series! Most of them are just as wonderful!
Artemis Fowl was written by Eoin Colfer and was originally published in April 2003 by Disney Press. The story revolves around Artemis Fowl a very rich, genius criminal mastermind oh and did I mention that he is only 12 years old, and the son of an Irish crime lord. Artemis is doing his best to keep his family afloat; since the disappearance of his father his mother has rarely left her bedroom and is slipping more often into a delusional state, barely recognizing her own son. Artemis wants to ensure that the family continues to survive so with the help of his bodyguard he develops a plan to capture a fairy and hold her for ransom. He knows that the fairies have lots of gold and he wants it. After lots of research he finds a fairy nearby and captures her. The fairy, Holly had been out on duty trying to capture a rogue troll, but she is weak because she hasn’t recharged her magic and so she is taken hostage by the boy. She is not any old ordinary fairy she is part of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance) team which is a covert operation team that works to ensure that humans never learn about the fairies underground fortress. The LEP retrieval team underestimates Artemis because they don’t know his secret weapon is the holy book he tricked a fairy into giving him which gives away all their secrets. Will he get the gold that he demands in exchange for Holly or will a covert team swoop in and save her and spoil his plans? I enjoyed this book. I didn’t really know anything about it before I picked it up. I didn’t even read the synopsis before I started reading. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that Artemis was a “villain”. I like that he wants to do whatever he can to help his family and he is very loyal to his friends/workers. Throughout the book we see glimpses of Artemis becoming a nicer person. There are little instances where he makes a joke and laughs inwardly and I really liked that. You get to see that he is a boy after all. I also really liked the other characters in the book. It was interesting to think that there would be a whole police force for the fairies it was as if I was watching an action movie. There was the technology friendly Centaur Foaly and the mean Commander Root to name a few of the interesting mystical creatures living underground. I liked Holly though at times I found her irritating; I think that she will play a role in the future books so I look forward to getting to know not only her but the other characters more. Something I liked about the book was the code on the front cover and throughout the book. It is a string of Gnommish symbols that compromised a substitution cipher. It is pretty long so I didn’t take the time to figure it out myself. Since this book came out in 2003 it was easy to get the translation from Google. I think that this would be a good activity for a child to do after completing the book. I plan on picking up the continuation of the series this month (as aforementioned in my above TBR video). I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. Now that the final book in the series was released this summer it makes it easier to read the series knowing that you never have to wait for the next book to come out. Clever, colorful, and marvelously written! Four and a half stars!
Great book but sequels are better
It's hilarious, it's funny, and people of all ages will enjoy this amazing, thrilling book. Make's you want to dive into the rest of the series!
