Add a CommentI, on the other hand, ADORED this book! I read it in french but it was still amazing! It was hooking, full of epicness. It really made me think about love and friendship and how much it really means in life. How much it's hard to break a strong relashionship with an animal you grew up with. I love telling the story to others. One of the best reads I've read by now :) I would definitely recommend this book!
I was wary about reading a novel narrated by a horse but this novel surprised me. Joey's voice is clear and straight forward and other than the conceit that Joey understands what every human being says, never becomes unbelievable. Joey is in many ways an observer in the novel. Of course, as a war horse, he does a multitude of tasks, but he serves as an intriguing mediator between the reader and the other characters he encounters. The harshness of World War I is depicted masterfully, never flinching from the realities of war but never becoming too gruesome for its target audience of children. A moving narrative of the animals that played such an important role in the war and insanity that is war, the novel is a wonderful story for all ages.

enjoyed the book, but would have been great to read when i was reading black beauty and the jack london books, etc., it was a quick uplifting read... note: i don't think horses should eat buttercups???

This book is one of the best books and I liked every part of it.
I love that this story is told from Joey, the horses perspective. It allows the reader to see the horrors of war without any of the political issues or choosing who the enemy is. Joey encounters good people on both sides of this war, and sadly less than kind humans on both sides. This novel begs us to find our inner 'humanity', the word itself a huge irony.
People are silly. They will 9 times out of 10 tell you that the book was better than the movie. This is not the case here. The movie was a barrel of EpiC. This book, in short, and by comparison, was a reading FaiL.
Slightly better than the movie, interesting in that it's told from the horse's perspective, beautiful story.
Good read. much better than the movie, but I suspect that the London play is fantastic!
