Outstanding. A rare remake that does justice to the original. Jeff Bridges creates his own well done interpretation of the Rooster Cogburn character instead of making the horrible mistake of attempting to be another John Wayne (impossible). Hailee Steinfeld gives a terrific performance as well. FIVE STARS.

The Coen brothers are consistently among the best storytellers in American film today, and they do not disappoint with this film. Jeff Bridges gives yet another terrific performance in a career full of such performances as the magnificent grizzled wreck Coburn, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper inhabit their roles perfectly, and young Hailee Steinfeld impresses as Mattie Ross. An outstanding achievement.

I couldn't finish this movie. I found the acting "wooden" and interactions between characters unconvincing. The Mattie Ross character especially came across as "scripted" and the Jeff Bridges' character came across as a little too "washed up". An actor with a little more "edge", perhaps like Russel Crow, may have been better type-casting for that part.

Several previous commenters have suggested that this version does not stand up to the 1969 version. Well, I've put a hold on the 1969 version, and if that one is better than this one, I'll petition SPL to permit a six-star rating. Because I love this version. It's been awhile since I've enjoyed a movie this much. (incidentally, does the actress who plays Mattie Ross remind anyone else of a young Whil Weaton, star of "Stand by Me" and "Star Trek: Next Generation"?)

Western crime drama. Proffessionally done. Good casting (I liked Damon best and portrayed Campbell to a T). If it's your first viewing it may be your favorite however mine is the original w/John Wayne.

I enjoyed the movie. The way the character of Mattie Ross spoke reminded me a lot of Anne of Green Gables.

very enjoyable movie. I was leary about the movie because it was done by the Coen brothers, but they did a good job. It kept my attention. The girl who plays Mattie is excellent.

I enjoyed this one almost as much as the original. Roosters dialogue was hard to understand at times. At least I wasnt bored.

Oddly faithful to both the book and the original film. Still this version does have it's own strengths and points, retaining the books original dreary, but more realistic, ending. Both Bridges and Damon do good jobs maintaining solid characters.
