When the mother of 8 year old Emily Wiggins dies suddenly, Emily is left alone, except for her turtle, Rufus. She sets out to find her Aunt Hilda, because her mother's nasty brother, Victor, is the last person in the world that Emily wants to live with. Along the way Emily meets Jackson, another orphan, and they help each other. However, once Uncle Victor learns that Emily has inherited a fortune from Miss Nash, her mother's employer, he is determined to find Emily and get his hands on that fortune. How will Emily, a timid girl, avoid the clutches of her nasty Uncle Victor? Reviewed by BPL volunteer LS

We read this book aloud as a family activity. It was great fun. My son loved the different sayings that ended each chapter in giant print: "Now what in the flippin flapjacks is going to happen next?" The ending could have been expanded a bit for greater satisfaction and resolution.
